UEF //  Summer School will arrange a course about Machine Learning and Bioinformatics: Biomedical Data Science (5 ECTS) at Kuopio , Finland


The course will cover current topics related to bioinformatics challenges and machine learning applications in biomedicine. The specific topics are:
1) How to access and use genome-wide measurement data across disease. The course will briefly introduce basics of molecular biology and biomedicine and give a broad overview of the data produced by the latest measurement technologies.
2) How to model and identify candidate genes and pathways involved in disease pathogenesis.
3) Mathematical basis of dimensionality reduction, signal feature analysis and inference
The course consists of lectures and small group exercises given by national and international experts. In addition students will make a project plan in small teams during which they practice working in an interdisciplinary setting. This course is applicable to undergraduate and post-graduate students with biomedical or computational background.

Teaching methods and assessment:  Lectures and exercises/problem-based tasks, independent work
Evaluation:  Pass/Fail.
5 ects: Evaluation is based on an oral presentation+written project summary
2 ects: Evaluation is based on a learning diary and attending the first week program

First students have successfully completed the NordBioMedNet Online Mouse Histology Course!

Understanding of mouse histology is an important component in the professional toolbox of a modern biomedical scientist. Mouse is currently widely used as a model for human diseases, and in order to master the human disease-like manifestations in mice, the normal mouse histology and its similarities and differences compared to human histology must be understood. The NordBioMedNet online mouse histology course has been developed to provide the students with knowledge about mouse histology, differences between human and mouse histology and pathological alterations in different mouse strains. The course participants will also learn to use WebMicroscope and collect and prepare samples for histological analyses.

First Online Mouse Histology Course was organised in the NordBioMedNet portal in spring 2016, and it turned out to be extremely popular: almost 50 students from Universities of Bergen, Eastern Finland and Turku as well as Karolinska Institutet participated and completed the course. Course teacher, Leena Strauss from the University of Turku is already planning to reorganise the course again in the near future. Mouse histology training will also be an important module in the NordBioMedNet Open Educational Resource in Biomedicine – a future virtual training platform which will be developed and set up by the network.

Biomedicine education looks into the future

“Experts of biomedicine are an increasingly important link between medicine and natural sciences. In tomorrow’s labour market, these experts will have entirely new kinds of roles,” said Lars-Arne Haldosen, Director of Biomedicine Programmes at Karolinska Institutet, when he was visiting Kuopio.

Three years ago, the Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Eastern Finland launched a programme in health biosciences, and the institute now celebrates the transition of the first students to the Master’s level. In addition, the programme is currently in the process of changing its name to biomedicine. Haldosen, who spoke in the celebrations, focused on how the field’s education should be developed in order to better meet changing labour market needs.
